PERSEPOLIS

Yes, I'm still obsessing over this book. I have been since college... the second time through (college, not the book. I've read Persepolis more than 33 times). So obsessed, in fact, that I special ordered the French independent film and watched it with subtitles... the entire thing, from casting to press conferences. I like Marjane Satrapi better than Art Spiegleman (which is saying a lot, especially since I'm not the graphic novel or even comic book type). So here's what I've decided:

1. No, I will not be showing this film to my students... drat. It's PG-13 for a reason. Guess you can't make a film about the Iranian Revolution and Saddam's reign of terror from Iraq without throwing in some violence and drug use.
2. When I'm done teaching, everyone I know... well, at least 34 of you (because some 9th grader stole my 35th copy last year) is going to get your very own thrice-used copy for Christmas.
3. This will be the content of my first lecture series when I get so bored being a stay at home mom that I start throwing literary analysis parties where I'll serve cucumber sandwiches and release my realist agenda in full force because I've been talking baby talk all day.

I still do not have any idea what the hell you are talking about. Except #3... that's why I am of course in for Wednesday. A girl has to get out every now and then. Then maybe you can fill me in on this book you love so much. I don't want to be left out if it's that good.

Nicole... As an English major and teacher, I have a random question for you.

How often is -- used in writing? Is this something that people are using more of? Isn't it the same thing as a single dash (-)... Do you see it from your students or in all the literature you read?

Received an email from a friend and it had -- throughout the whole thing. I've seen it but, not this much. Wonder if I'm missing something.... trying to improve my writing skills a bit.

What do you think?
(I'll check back here for a response! Thanks)

You won't see many -- in professional writing (ie: essays or literary text) but it is perfectly common and kosher in less formal mediums such as email, blogging, and creative non-fiction. I myself frequently employ the use of -- as I grow bored of () and ,

Though -- is not common in professional writing, do not assume that it cannot be used correctly in such. I imagine as pop culture continues to invade the world of word, you will see -- popping up in more places than one.
