Powell 'n Around

We basically live at Lake Powell in the summer so I thought I'd fill you all in on our summer happenings with some pictures. Isn't the first one of Porter and the Peach SOOO cute! We bought my Dad a paddleboat for Christmas the year before last, which had always been my favorite thing to do at the lake until the advent of the kayaks. Seriously, I can't get enough. When I'm kayaking along Powell I pretend that I'm batteling the swells along the Kaua'i Napali coastline. Quinn keeps telling me we are going to do it next time we hit Hawaii but I'm way scared because I'm such a woose (sp?) when it comes to upper body strength. The Napali coast can only be reached by a severe death-defying multiple-day hike through jungle and cliff, or by kayak. They are the most beautiful, secluded beaches anywhere.
We were able to see the whole shore line from a navy seal boat over Spring Break and I saw it from the "Little Grand Canyon" of Hawaii the year before, but Q says next time is it and to start preparing myself mentally. I think he's got some idea about the nude beaches supposed to exist on the Napali that is driving his motivation for the treck. Still, I told him, the only way I'm doing it is if we take a two man so he can help me survive. It's doutless that it will happen, however. One can only kayak the Napali coast when the surf is low during the summer and by then the whales are gone. I don't ever anticipate visiting Hawaii again whithout the whales. Once you've seen a humpback breach, it changes you somehow. So for now, I'm content with sunset rides at Powell.

JUNE LOON

I told my mom I had to come home from Lake Powell at least 1 day to do some major blog updating. She was pretty sad, but I'm sure the rest of you will understand. I've been a serious slacker and, what with my passion for blogging, I could not neglect my duty any longer. About my blogging obsession: We've been blogging since New York (2005) and are very proud to say we started blogspotage on the old interface. We are true fans and members and have since converted many to the cause. Sometimes I hear less aware friends say things like, "Oh, I just don't have the time." They look down on blogging as if they were above it, forging ahead in the lonely journey of seclusion that has left them stuck in the past. Do they not understand the convenience of journaling, scrapbooking, and staying in touch all in one?!?!?! I don't even shutterfly anymore. Forget wasting $$$ on cutsie paper- I don't scrap my fave pics, I blog them! And what's more: I'm not the only one that sees them and basks in the joy of life shared. If five minutes a week is all you can spare, then five minutes a week is all you need! Plus, let us not leave by the wayside the tremendous fact that every entry is dated, anologged, organized, and stored extrenally so in case your house burns down- you still have family memories intact! With all the benefits, there's no reason not to be a blog hog- other then complete stupidity and lack of fortitude to pull oneself out of the rectitude of ignorance.

....that said.... here's what we've been up too:

THE GAWDEN (as we say in Manhatten)

This year's success rate has taken a DRASTIC blow. We didn't fertilize, thinking the fruits of our labors last year were simply due to our industrious green thumbs... big mistake. One major oddity: Check out our hybrid. I believe it is a green and yellow squash mix, at least that's what it tastes like. The tomatoes are not giving it up and they're causing us great grief. None-the-less, we have been able to enjoy some gawden dinners and have wisened up to the notion of plant rotation for next year's crop.

MEREE turns the big 22!

At 22 I was graduating from college, on my way to start a graduate degree in San Francisco, spending all my money on MAC products, and planning exotic trips. Never once did I think of marriage or domesticating myself. Meree at 22 is the likeness of Mother Teresa only with far greater challenges. She is raising two teenage boys and a baby... plus Matt (her husband). She is also an orphan. Sheesh- that's the half of it. She is my hero. Always happy, always cheerful. Plus she makes really good enchiladas. By the way- I'm becomming more domesticated by the summer (someone please tell my mother-in-law). For Meree's B-Day I whipped out a spontaneous home-made yogurt cake with soy milk cream cheese frosting (oxymoron)! I've also made dinner, done the laundry, and cleaned several times since school let out.

AND HERE'S THE BIG FAT NEWS!!!!

We put $10,000.00 additional principal down on our mortgage this month! This was a big moment for me so I snapped a picture. I'm trying to remember if I've ever written a check out for this much money before... no- when we paid off the truck it was 7,000. Thinking out loud... anyway, this is huge! Don't go thinking we have money, especially now. We scrimped and saved pennies to do this and it won't really even make a dent. Alas, why does St. George housing have to be so darn expensive. Will we ever build a house?

PS: I've also started scrapblogging- though it's mostly just experimenting until I get better internet. I tried uploading my pages on blogspot but they don't work very well so you can visit my pages here or at www.scrapblog.com/hadley
It's a pretty cool online scrapping site. Check it out if you haven't discovered it yet. The best part is that it's totally free and you can order the pages!

2008 U.S. OPEN at Torrey Pines!!!

Okay, let me just tell you... this was one of the best little trips I have EVER been on and one of the COOLEST things I have ever been to! It was AMAZING! I even forgot about the hefty speeding ticket I got in the gorge on the way there. (next time that cop calls and says he has someone splattered all over the freeway, I'm going to tell him that I'll be there in an hour or two) Anyway, getting back to the point, the Open was AWESOME! Me, my Dad, Bro in law Ryan, and Trevor went down to San Diego and stayed at Ryan's uncle's place in Poway. We went to Thurs. and Fri. rounds. We saw some amazing Golf on Friday!! Remember the awesome Yankee game I just went to?? Well, this almost came close to beating it. (never thought I'd say that) You arent allowed to take phones or cameras into the tournament so I snuck in a disposable and got a few quick shots. Mostly of Tiger and Phil cause they were paired together. There were SO many people following them. You had to get about 45 min ahead of them if you wanted to see them up close. I Went to the 2006 Open in New York at Winged Foot - that was my first PGA event and I have to say that they are my favorite things to go to. Winged Foot was the best course I have ever seen! Torrey Pines was pretty awesome too cause it is a public course. I am going to go play it now that I have been there. Anyway, here are a few poor quality pics I managed to take... Enjoy!

Jim Nantz was doing a book signing in the pic on the right, if you follow where the boob is pointing, you can see us behind him - he was way cool!

Okay, this is the par 3 8th. - It seemed like we always happened to be in the right place at exactly the right time! We saw three of the best shots of the whole tournament! Tiger went first and stuck it within 10 ft. Then, Phil stuck his inside of tiger within about 5 feet on the same line. So, everyone was yelling at Adam Scott to put his inside both of them. His tee shot, bounced twice, hit the bin and stopped about 3 in from the cup. The place went Nuts!!! it was amazing to watch such good golf up close! - t.v just doesn't do it justice.

Tiger at the Tee

We camped out most of the time in the 13 Grand Stand. On the 2nd day, they moved the tee back and turned it into a 614 yd Par 5. We saw 2 Eagles that day, 1 by Tiger. We saw some amazing shots here all day. It was definetly the most exciting hole!!

This is how many people were following Tiger and Phil - poor suckers, I had great seat right next to the green about pin high!

My Brother-in-law Ryan

One of My favorite players - Brandt Snedeker - one time I yelled, "Go Brandt!" and he was clear across the fairway but I was right next to the rope and he gave me a nod and a wave - it made my day! - we couldn't get Mike Weir to even budge.

We're going to make it a tradition and go every 2 years!

CAN'T WAIT TILL 2010 PEBBLE BEACH!!!!!!
